The 1979 movie The Warriors is a classic. There’s no disputing it. The story’s simplicity makes for a great thrill ride as we follow the small time gang through its journey home while being hunted by every gang in New York. But for some reason Hollywood’s decided it’s time to remake the classic, and word has it that Tony Scott is to direct the film and he has plans to make it drastically different from the original. I feel that a remake is totally unnecessary, and not for the usual “the original is good enough” reasoning. I just feel like remaking a film that had such style is futile. If he’s going to make it drastically different, why doesn’t Tony just give it a new title? After all, he’s Tony Scott. His name alone is a good selling point. They shouldn’t hang onto a title that has instant clout among movie fans. It’s like when they remade Death Race 2000 into Death Race with Jason Statham. It completely stripped the film of its style and humor. The idea was that Death Race was an over the top thrill ride that had little taste or purpose. It knew it was stupid and prided itself on that. Granted, the Warriors had more substance, opting to be more comic bookish than most movies of the time. But given Tony Scott’s track record, I’m not sure that he would do the film justice. I’m not saying that the film would not be good, it just wouldn’t be right. It would be like saying you’re going to make pizza, but instead of using of using pizza sauce, you use mustard. And instead of pizza dough, you put it on a biscuit. It just doesn’t look like a pizza does it? That’s because it isn’t. A remake just is not necessary. If you’ve never seen the Warriors, I heavily reccomend it. You can pick it up here. The Warriors (The Ultimate Director’s Cut)
