Okay, remember way back when I posted that I wouldn’t bash twilight on my website? Well, I’m staying true to that by letting someone *else* bash twilight on my site. The guys who made Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans may have finally found the right franchise to spoof with the movie Vampires Suck. I have no idea whether or not this will be entertaining (their track record definitely doesn’t speak in their defense) but the fact that they’re taking aim at a franchise that is just as well known for the people that hate it as well as love it, this should be interesting at the very least.

Ah, Gremlins. Gremlins is the ultimate movie to show kids who are begging mom and dad to get them a pet of some kind. For those who have never seen this, you have my pity because this movie is a bonafide classic of comedy, horror, and even Christmas genres.

The film starts off innocently enough with Randall Peltzer, a bumbling inventor whose inventions are great except for the fact that they do not work, looking in Chinatown for a gift for his son Billy (our hero played by Zach Galligan). He discovers a small antiques shop where he discovers the Mogwai Gizmo (voiced by Howie Mandell, of all people). The owner of the shop doesn’t want to sell Gizmo because of the responsibility he would come with, but his sneaky underhanded grandson has no problem selling the little dude. When Randall takes Gizmo home, Gizmo’s greeted warmly by the family, but Randall recites the rules of caring for a Mogwai.

1. It hates bright light. And sunlight will kill it.
2. Don’t get it wet, not even to take a bath.
3. Whatever you do, no matter how much it begs, no matter how much it cries, never EVER feed it after midnight.

Easy enough rules to follow, right? But don’t forget, this is a B movie, and some poor schmuck, usually the hero, screws up at least one of the rules. Well, the poor schmuck in this movie is, surprise surprise, our hero Billy. When Billy gets Gizmo wet, a bunch of new, very mean, Mogwai are born, and when the little meanies trick him into feeding them after midnight, they turn into viscious, slimy, scaly, pimply demons that send Billy’s sleepy little town into the Christmas from Hell.

This movie is one of my top five favorite non-John Hughes 80s movies. Joe Dante’s film took a hokey B movie concept and milked it for all it was worth until it was pure comedic/horror gold. The film doesn’t take itself seriously, instead relishing in just how old school (despite some of the language) it is. It was a true genre bender that made a mark. It was almost two movies, the first half being a family friendly Christmas flick, and then the second half being an excellent horror flick. The two together was like peanut butter and chocolate, but some people are allergic to peanuts just like there were some complaints about one half or the other of the film. Many said that baiting the audience with family friendly fare and then turning it on its head with horror was too risky, as the film legitimately scared some children. In fact, it was one of the movies that led to the creation of the PG-13 rating. But these people obviously didn’t get the point of the movie.

The movie is a fun, riotous piece of cinema, and belongs on the shelf of any movie fan. I won’t touch on the sequel, because that movie’s a whole other ballgame that you either love or hate, but there’s no hating the original. It is a definite must own. Oh, and it features one of the kings of B movies, Dick Miller!

If you want to pick up Gremlins, you can do so right here on Bluray and DVD! (BTW I don’t want any crap for using an image from Gremlins 2. It was too epic to pass up.)

I normally am a very apolitical person. Politics not only bore me, but they disgust me in such a manner that I can hardly find the words to describe it. But when I heard about You’re Welcome, America: A Final Night with George W. Bush I had to see it. For those who don’t know what it is, it is a one man show written and performed by Will Ferrell, reprising his most famous character from his SNL glory days. He plays Bush as a glorified, cocky idiot (how else would Ferrell play him?). Ferrell’s performance is unflinching, and it is especially great that he never breaks character even once. While I’ve always maintained the attitude of trying not to criticize the president too much, I will say that this show had a good mix of scathing satire and simply poking fun. If you are a Will Ferrell fan, or if you were one of the many Bush haters, this is a must own. Just remember, it’s for mature audiences only.

If you want to pick it up, you can do so here! Remember, you guys buying things from here helps me keep this site going!

I have just recently watched the first Clerks film, the debut of director Kevin Smith. It’s kind of a miniature right of passage for an aspiring filmmaker, slacker, or popculture junkie to see the film, and I happen to fall into all three of those categories. I had felt that cutting off the View Askewniverse with Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was sort of a flat way to end it. After all, as much as I like those characters, I felt that it was the wrong way to go out. So now we have the story of Dante and Randall in their thirties, and how has the situation changed?

Well, not a whole lot as it turns out. Randall has accidentally burned down the Quik Stop and video store so now they are forced to work in a fast food store with Becky, played by Rosario Dawson, and a sheltered 19 year old named Elias. Dante (still played by Brian O’Halloran) is about to marry a girl he only vaguely likes and leave for Florida, which Randall (still played by Jeff Anderson) isn’t too happy about. The film spans a whole day in their lives, just like the first film did, and shows exactly what happens when a person hasn’t done anything with their lives.

I felt like this movie was great. This was exactly what a sequel should do. It genuinely had something to say. I felt that this was a prime example of how a sequel should be made, and why sequels like Spider-Man 3 fall short. The stories just don’t make sense. There was no need for a third film if there wasn’t really anything that needed to be said. It just made sense for Clerks 2 to happen because fans genuinely wondered what would have happened after the first film when Dante declares he’ll take charge of his life. And of course we find he hasn’t. And Randall’s just as funny as he ever was. I was surprised that the character of Becky didn’t seem thrown in. The minute she comes on screen, you feel like you know the character already. It felt good to see Jay and Silent Bob be background characters again, too. Although you see a little too much of Jay in one scene (just watch the movie). And the donkey show scene was easily the most disturbing thing I’ve seen in my life, but it was still funny.

The DVD is great, with nearly six hours of extra features, and a very in depth making of feature that was entertaining. I completely recommend the movie to fans of Smith’s previous works, and to the newcomers: Go see the first, then Clerks 2.

If you want to pick it up on DVD, which I heavily recommend you do, you can do so here!

Mark Borchardt is a man whose reputation is very murky. Some people consider him to be a talented and driven man whose ambitions are hindered by lack of money. Other people consider him to be a walking joke, with dreams that he does not have the talent or knowledge to fulfill. The film American Movie somehow successfully leads it up to the audience to make up their own minds about him. I for one was both inspired by and embarrassed for Borchardt. He seems to have a good cinematic eye, but his writing just isn’t there. Throw in the fact that the people he chooses to work with are either unenthusiastic, pretentious, or just unreliable, and it’s also understandable why he’s still in the same place he started. Borchardt expresses a laziness in his work, while at the same time talks passionately about film. It is still unknown if he’ll ever make anything of himself, and American Movie offers no answers either way. It is a film that should be seen by anyone who wishes to be a filmmaker.

Okay, as mentioned in a previous entry, I’m a huge fan of the team of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and director Edgar Wright. I think Pegg and Frost are today’s equivalent of Laurel and Hardy. Shaun of the Dead is one of my favorite movies, and if you liked Shaun of the Dead, then you’ll love Hot Fuzz, but this film is darker.

Hot Fuzz is about policeman, pardon me, police officer, Nicholas Angel, who has just been transferred to small village Sandford. He is transferred for being the best police officer in his department, and is making the rest of the officers look bad. So, begrudgingly, he departs for the sleepy town. Angel is initially shocked by the allowance of underage drinking, loitering, and other behaviors that the rest of the town rights off as “for the greater good” as allowing smaller, petty crimes, detracts from major crimes. However, when a series of bizarre and outlandish accidents begin occuring, Angel is determined to prove that they were murders, much to the chagrin of his co-police officers, and the excitement of his partner Danny (Nick Frost).

This film is fantastic. It lovingly pokes fun at police action movies, buddy cop movies, and basically ANY cop movie ever made. Pegg and Frost are a near perfect comedic duo, and they are obviously the best part of the film. However, as much as I love the movie, I felt it was a bit darker than Shaun of the Dead. But, I can still whole-heartedly recommend it as one of the funniest/coolest movies to come around in a long time.

So, I finally watched the premiere of the new Kamen Rider series, Kamen Rider Double and I have to say that of the Kamen Riders from the last ten years, Double has the most promise to be the best. The most important thing about this series is that it FEELS like the old school Rider series. W even has a scarf, which hasn’t been seen on a rider since the 80s.

Double focuses on 2 characters specifically. Shotaro, and Phillip, who both run a detective agency in ecology based city Futo. In this city strange USB like devices called Gaia Memories give the users superpowers and turn them into monsters. Shotaro and Phillip are able to use Gaia Memories to become Kamen Rider Double. That’s right. Two people become one superhero. It’s a really cool plot device if you ask me.

The best parts about Double are the facts that Double has a much higher production value than any of the previous Rider series. The opening scene has more spectacle in it than the rest of the series did throughout their whole runs. The effects are leaps and bounds over the previous series. And like I said, this series actually feels like the original rider series where we get an idea of who the villain is right off the bat, instead of making us wonder throughout the whole season like the rest of the series have done.

My only nitpick so far is the character of Akiko. She comes off as whiney and annoying. But here’s hoping some character development fixes that.

So yeah, if you’re at all curious about the new Kamen Rider series, definitely give it a try.
