Vampires have kind of gone out of control the past few years. I blame it all on a certain franchise that features vampires that aren’t really vampires paired with young girls with no sense of self-reliance. But in the depressing sea of vampire movies and books there is Let Me In, or if you want to use the original book’s title, Let the Right One In. For the sake of avoiding confusion, we’ll keep calling it Let Me In. Let Me In tells the story of a boy who is frequently bullied, picked on, and all of the above. That’s before he becomes friends with a young girl who happens to be one of the undead. The cool thing about the story is that it’s not toned down, and it doesn’t emulate the previously mentioned franchise. It’s gory in all the right places, but carries a humanity that cannot be described, you just have to experience it for yourself. There was a film made in Sweden, home of the original novel, titled Let the Right One In, and it is amazing. Since the Swedish film did so well critically, that naturally means that an American producer has to swoop in and do an Americanized version because gosh darn it we red blooded Americans can’t stand subtitles or anything foreign. It scares us. (That’s called sarcasm, kids.) The American version is titled Let Me In, and it’s directed by Matthew Reeves, the guy who directed Cloverfield. So far the movie looks pretty good. But don’t take my word for it (scratch that. Take my word for it) and watch the trailer!

Also, if you want to ensure you get a seat to see it, then get your ticket in advance at Fandango.com.

And if you want to pick up the original novel and original film, you can do so here!

Most of you probably remember my Evil Dead 2 Bluray review (and shame on you if you don’t, lol), and you probably remember me proclaiming it to be one of the greatest horror films of all time. Well, we have finally been graced with a Bluray version of the first film, the completely insane/hardcore debut of Sam Raimi. The Bluray has a great second disk DVD with bonus features out the wazoo, and it also has a remastered frame height/width. This is a horror movie every horror fan should see.

If you want to pick it up, and if you consider yourself a horror fan, you should.

Ah, Gremlins. Gremlins is the ultimate movie to show kids who are begging mom and dad to get them a pet of some kind. For those who have never seen this, you have my pity because this movie is a bonafide classic of comedy, horror, and even Christmas genres.

The film starts off innocently enough with Randall Peltzer, a bumbling inventor whose inventions are great except for the fact that they do not work, looking in Chinatown for a gift for his son Billy (our hero played by Zach Galligan). He discovers a small antiques shop where he discovers the Mogwai Gizmo (voiced by Howie Mandell, of all people). The owner of the shop doesn’t want to sell Gizmo because of the responsibility he would come with, but his sneaky underhanded grandson has no problem selling the little dude. When Randall takes Gizmo home, Gizmo’s greeted warmly by the family, but Randall recites the rules of caring for a Mogwai.

1. It hates bright light. And sunlight will kill it.
2. Don’t get it wet, not even to take a bath.
3. Whatever you do, no matter how much it begs, no matter how much it cries, never EVER feed it after midnight.

Easy enough rules to follow, right? But don’t forget, this is a B movie, and some poor schmuck, usually the hero, screws up at least one of the rules. Well, the poor schmuck in this movie is, surprise surprise, our hero Billy. When Billy gets Gizmo wet, a bunch of new, very mean, Mogwai are born, and when the little meanies trick him into feeding them after midnight, they turn into viscious, slimy, scaly, pimply demons that send Billy’s sleepy little town into the Christmas from Hell.

This movie is one of my top five favorite non-John Hughes 80s movies. Joe Dante’s film took a hokey B movie concept and milked it for all it was worth until it was pure comedic/horror gold. The film doesn’t take itself seriously, instead relishing in just how old school (despite some of the language) it is. It was a true genre bender that made a mark. It was almost two movies, the first half being a family friendly Christmas flick, and then the second half being an excellent horror flick. The two together was like peanut butter and chocolate, but some people are allergic to peanuts just like there were some complaints about one half or the other of the film. Many said that baiting the audience with family friendly fare and then turning it on its head with horror was too risky, as the film legitimately scared some children. In fact, it was one of the movies that led to the creation of the PG-13 rating. But these people obviously didn’t get the point of the movie.

The movie is a fun, riotous piece of cinema, and belongs on the shelf of any movie fan. I won’t touch on the sequel, because that movie’s a whole other ballgame that you either love or hate, but there’s no hating the original. It is a definite must own. Oh, and it features one of the kings of B movies, Dick Miller!

If you want to pick up Gremlins, you can do so right here on Bluray and DVD! (BTW I don’t want any crap for using an image from Gremlins 2. It was too epic to pass up.)

So remember way back when I did that blog to hype Trick r Treat? Well I finally saw it myself, and here’s what I thought. It was definitely more fun than Paranormal Activity, lol. In all seriousness it was a very very fun movie to watch. It kind of loses its effect if not watched with friends, and I definitely believe it would have been fantastic in theatres. There are too many plotlines for me to talk about, but I will say that the plot of the movie is very well done, especially for tying four stories together for one complete narrative. I especially love the way it ties in some of the stories of Halloween’s origins and how some of the most well known aspects of Halloween come from other cultures. the acting is also great. Of special note is Dylan Baker, who does an excellent job as a principal/serial killer, as he gets some of the best lines in the movie. It should also be kept in mind that this movie is very much a dark comedy as opposed to straight up horror, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I wholeheartedly reccomend this to horror fans, especially those of classic films such as John Carpenter’s Halloween. If you want to pick it up, you can do so here! Remember, it’s everyone who buys something that helps keep this website up and running!

One of my all time favorite horror films is the classic movie The Wolfman, starring Lon Chaney Jr. That film just had a magical air about it that made it timeless. Well, as with a lot of old movies, the Wolfman is being remade. But after watching the trailer, you can tell that this isn’t some half-hearted rehash. You can seriously tell that there has been a lot of effort put into expanding the film, and I honestly think it has potential to be one of the few remakes that is as good as its original. It also has some of my favorite actors, including Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving, and it stars Benicio Del Toro as the Wolfman.

I’m a huge, huge, HUGE fan of Asian movies. Especially Asian Horror/Sci-Fi movies. The Korean film The Host is no exception.

The film follows a family as they try to recover a little girl who has been taken by a river monster.

Sounds simple enough, right? Well, no. First of all, this family is disfunctional at best. The main character, Gang-Du is “slow witted”. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, and it can be argued that his daughter’s, Hyun-seo, being taken is his fault. His slow wittedness is attributed to being beaten up and malnourished as a child. His brother is a college dropout and alcoholic. His father is somewhat of a pushover. His sister is an archery competitor, ashamed of only winning a bronze medal due to taking too long to fire. And to make it all worse, the US and Korean governments report that the creature is carrying a virus.

The thing that makes this monster movie stand above every monster movie since Jaws is simple: There’s a genuine heart and message behind it. The film shows how tragedy can bring a family together. Not only that, but there is also a biting political satire in it towards both the US military as well as (but to a lesser extent) the Korean Government. Director Bong Joon-Ho sets up some great shots to make this fim nice and atmospheric. Another great thing is that the monster only appears a few times in the film, instead choosing to focus on the main characters. And the monster itself is also a high point. Instead of a gargantuan, couple hundred foot tall beast, this monster is roughly the size of a large truck. Somehow that makes it scarier and more realistic to me. This movie stands as one of my favorite, if not my favorite, monster movies.

If you look online or on TV you will probably have already seen the trailer for the film Paranormal Activity. It’s another mockumentary horror film that is about the supernatural, but unlike the Blair Witch Project or Cloverfield, this film is making some serious waves among the horror community, and some are even saying it is the scariest film in years. What makes this film truly unique is the marketing technique that’s being used to promote the film. Since it is an independent film production, it is using the “demand” technique. This way they do not play it in places that they know will not be interested. I’ve already demanded to see it, and will have a full review once I have. Here is the trailer!

2009 has been a big drag in terms of entertainment. It seems like there hasn’t been a genuinely good movie come out that audiences could get truly excited about. Well, now we have Zombieland, and it is AWESOME.

Zombieland, as the name implies, takes place in a time when the world has become over run with zombies to the point that they outnumber normal humans. It focuses on four people, identified by where they are from only. There is Columbus, played by Jesse Eisenberg. Columbus is a kid who is just looking for a place to call home. Then there is Wichita (played by Emma Stone), a big sister who has survived living in Zombieland by not trusting anyone except for her little sister, Little Rock. Little Rock (played by Abigail Breslin) is a kid who has been deprived of her childhood because of the Zombie Apocalypse. Little Rock and Wichita are trying to make it to an amusement park that is supposedly zombie free, and to give Little Rock at least one night of just being a kid. Accompanying all three of them is zombie killer extraordinaire Tallahassee, played brilliantly by Woody Harrelson. Tallahassee doesn’t want to get close to people and values only one thing: Twinkies. He argues that soon Twinkies will all be expired and unedible, and therefor need to be cherished/eaten when found.

This film was FUN. That’s all there is to say. It was the most fun zombie movie I had ever seen, and not because of the zombie killing. It’s fun because the characters do EXACTLY what you say you would do if you had almost an entire planet to yourself. Easily the most memorable scene in the movie is when they go to Hollywood and decide to stay in the presumably empty home of a celebrity who will remain unnamed because it is quite possibly the best cameo of all time. The action in this is solid, but it’s the comedy that stands out more than anything else. There’s nothing else I can possibly say other than GO SEE THIS MOVIE.

Okay, so I’ve said before I’m not too much of a horror fan, especially when it comes to slasher films, but I’ve always liked the original Wes Craven classic A Nightmare on Elm Street. I always thought it was a masterpiece of its kind. It had a flair and style to it that horror movies were lacking at the time, and lack to this day. The idea of being killed in your dreams, the one place where a person should be able to relax and feel safe, was a pretty powerful idea.

But of course all of the forgettable sequels that followed kind of tarnished the film for me. So now they have a remake, which is pretty freaking inevitable these days, coming out soon. The remake, however, is promising to make some big changes to the franchise and things the audience knows. The trailer, as well as several reviesws out there for the script, suggest that Freddy Krueger may not always have been a supernatural serial killer. The film also changes Freddy’s makeup to look like a more realistic burn victim. I’m fine with that, because a little added realism goes a long way. Another reason I’m not entirely against this remake (yet, anyway) is because Jackie Earle Haley is playing Freddy. Haley is best known for playing Rorschach in last year’s Watchmen, which I was a big fan of. It remains to be seen whether or not the film will even come close to being as good as the original, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

If you want to pick up the original series, you can do so here! Granted, maybe only 3 of the movies in this set are worth watching, but it’ll save you the time and energy of hunting those three down.
