Robert Rodriguez is one of my favorite directors. He’s one of the few people that works outside of the Hollywood system that gets to do basically whatever he wants. When Grindhouse was released in 2007, there was almost more buzz about the fake trailer for Machete than the actual movies (although Planet Terror was excellent in my opinion). For those who are wondering about the Cinco de Mayo trailer that was released that showed Machete leading what can only be called a race war, it should be said that that trailer was also a fake. Rodriguez said that it was basically a joke. For those who want the real trailer, here it is!

Well, I’m staying true to that by letting someone *else* bash twilight on my site. The guys who made Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans may have finally found the right franchise to spoof with the movie Vampires Suck. I have no idea whether or not this will be entertaining (their track record definitely doesn’t speak in their defense) but the fact that they’re taking aim at a franchise that is just as well known for the people that hate it as well as love it, this should be interesting at the very least.

Everybody knows that the 1980s movie, by special effects genius-of-his-time Roy Harryhausen isn’t that great. The effects were a bit dated, the acting sucked, and it basically looked liked a Greek version of the Flash Gordon movie (another movie which I’ll be talking about in a later post). But, from the pit of bad movie Hades (pun intended, sorry) comes a remake. That’s right, somebody dug up the old movie and put in a bit of grime, gore, and excellence into a remake that will most definitely, even if it sucks, be better than it’s predecessor. First of all, it’s directed by Louis Leterrier, the guy who brought us the Incredible Hulk last year. So you can probably imagine how awesome this one’s going to be. It features Sam Worthington as Perseus, “born of a god, raised as a man” (I don’t wanna hear any crap of how they’re messing with mythology. It’s mythology for a reason) who is trying to prevent a war between Zeus (played by Liam Neeson, which is awesome as crap) and Hades (played by Ralph Fiennes, which is also awesome as crap). So yeah, it doesn’t sound like a whole lot of Titans are involved, but come on, we’ve got a while ahead of us before we start seeing anything major anyway. But, just so it lives up to it’s name, here’s a teaser for the movie.

One of my all time favorite horror films is the classic movie The Wolfman, starring Lon Chaney Jr. That film just had a magical air about it that made it timeless. Well, as with a lot of old movies, the Wolfman is being remade. But after watching the trailer, you can tell that this isn’t some half-hearted rehash. You can seriously tell that there has been a lot of effort put into expanding the film, and I honestly think it has potential to be one of the few remakes that is as good as its original. It also has some of my favorite actors, including Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving, and it stars Benicio Del Toro as the Wolfman.

I was amazed when I saw the 2006 film Stranger Than Fiction. Not only was it funny, and not only did it have an amusing story, but it featured something I never thought I would see in a movie. Will Ferrell. ACTING. Not only that, but acting well! For the first time ever I actually cared about a character Will Ferrell played. And now the rumor has it that Ferrell will be giving this type of acting another shot in his upcoming film Everything Must Go. It has a simple enough story. A man is thrown out by his wife, along with all of his possessions, and he must now sell them all in a yard sale in order to get somewhere. While this could also take the usual slapstick approach for Ferrell, many think that this story could yield a more straight faced approach. This could very well be the thing that Ferrell’s career needs, after some of his recent movies, such as Semi-Pro and Land of the Lost, did not fare very well at the box office. If his acting ability in Stranger Than Fiction is any indication, then we could see some good things come about.

If you haven’t seen Stranger Than Fiction, but would like to see real proof that Ferrell can act, then pick it up here! Remember, it’s everyone who buys from here that keeps this site going!

Okay, I am a huge X-Men fan, especially the movies. While the third film isn’t as good as the first two, I still managed to get some enjoyment out of it. I was really happy to find out this morning that Bryan Singer, the director of the first two films, is wanting to direct a fourth installment, that the producers have already said they want to happen. I know this is a really brief post, but this could prove to be awesome, since Singer clearly knows X-Men better than Superman.

If you want to pick up the original trilogy, or even X-Men Origins: Wolverine (which I didn’t enjoy as much, but it’s still entertaining), then you can do so here!

If you look online or on TV you will probably have already seen the trailer for the film Paranormal Activity. It’s another mockumentary horror film that is about the supernatural, but unlike the Blair Witch Project or Cloverfield, this film is making some serious waves among the horror community, and some are even saying it is the scariest film in years. What makes this film truly unique is the marketing technique that’s being used to promote the film. Since it is an independent film production, it is using the “demand” technique. This way they do not play it in places that they know will not be interested. I’ve already demanded to see it, and will have a full review once I have. Here is the trailer!

Okay, so I’ve said before I’m not too much of a horror fan, especially when it comes to slasher films, but I’ve always liked the original Wes Craven classic A Nightmare on Elm Street. I always thought it was a masterpiece of its kind. It had a flair and style to it that horror movies were lacking at the time, and lack to this day. The idea of being killed in your dreams, the one place where a person should be able to relax and feel safe, was a pretty powerful idea.

But of course all of the forgettable sequels that followed kind of tarnished the film for me. So now they have a remake, which is pretty freaking inevitable these days, coming out soon. The remake, however, is promising to make some big changes to the franchise and things the audience knows. The trailer, as well as several reviesws out there for the script, suggest that Freddy Krueger may not always have been a supernatural serial killer. The film also changes Freddy’s makeup to look like a more realistic burn victim. I’m fine with that, because a little added realism goes a long way. Another reason I’m not entirely against this remake (yet, anyway) is because Jackie Earle Haley is playing Freddy. Haley is best known for playing Rorschach in last year’s Watchmen, which I was a big fan of. It remains to be seen whether or not the film will even come close to being as good as the original, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

If you want to pick up the original series, you can do so here! Granted, maybe only 3 of the movies in this set are worth watching, but it’ll save you the time and energy of hunting those three down.

Trick ‘r Treat is an upcoming horror anthology film directed by Brian Dougherty that has been in the works for a VERY long time. It’s been re-edited, had its release date pushed back a few million times, and has finally been sentenced to the cinematic limbo that is the American Direct to DVD market. I would normally be outraged for the fact that it just looks like a fantastic movie. Now, I’m not that much of a horror fan. It takes a lot to get me excited about a horror movie. But this looks like it’ll be a fun movie. And so far the reviews have been really good. A lot are saying that it’s the best horror film of the past ten years. So you’re probably thinking, “yeah, Coty, that’s all well and good, but why aren’t you mad about the direct to DVD treatment?” I’ll tell you why. It’s because it might help the direct to DVD market get an injection of GOOD films. For example, in Japan it is considered just fine for a movie to go direct to DVD instead of theatres, unlike over here where it’s looked down on. The appeal is that the premiere is in your own home, as Kramer from Seinfeld put it. There are a lot of directors who are big names in Japan, such as Takashi Miike, who prefer going direct to DVD because it means that they aren’t held down by a studio and they get to do basically whatever they want. The point I’m trying to make is that maybe our direct to DVD market could become similar. After all, as Kevin Smith put it, theatrical runs are really just elaborate commercials for the DVD, where the real money is at.

I think Trick ‘r Treat is going to be a fantastic film, and I will have a full review of it up soon. Here’s the trailer, btw!
