Before there was Hot Fuzz or Shaun of the Dead, there was Spaced. Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Edgar Wright were all working on this comedy series for the BBC, and I have to say that it is my absolute favorite TV show ever. Spaced Stars Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes as Tim Bisley and Daisy Steiner, respectively. Tim is an aspiring comic artist whose career is at a stand still and is heart broken (and most likely mentally disturbed) after his girlfriend leaves him. Tim’s best friend is Mike (Nick Frost) a man who wants nothing more than to be a soldier, but was kicked out of the army due to his stealing of a tank and invading France on his own, where he was apprehended on top of Space Mountain at what was once EuroDisney Land. Daisy is a writer who never seems to have anything to write about. Daisy is both creative and lazy, two traits that never mix. She’ll take any excuse to blow off actually working, and those excuses usually lead to, you guessed it, working. Daisy is friends with a girl named Twist. Tim and Daisy are also friends with a pretentious and neurotic artist named Brian, as well as their landlady Marsha. Now here’s the twist. Tim and Daisy live together, under the false pretense that they are a “professional couple”, so that they can both keep their apartment, as Marsha said in her newspaper ad “professional couple only”. This, of course, hinders their lovelives.

The show was written by both Pegg and Hynes, which makes them perfectly fit their characters. And the humor of it is wonderful. It’s able to have the perfect mix of pop culture references and original witty dialogue. It goes into great fantasy sequences, and it’s amazingly hilarious. Edgar Wright’s directing is fantastic. It is obviously the same director from the aforementioned films. Unfortunately, there were only two seasons of the series, with a third one only most likely never happening, but never fear, because the series does get a dignified ending.

You can pick the series up here! Trust me, it is well worth it!

So, I finally watched the premiere of the new Kamen Rider series, Kamen Rider Double and I have to say that of the Kamen Riders from the last ten years, Double has the most promise to be the best. The most important thing about this series is that it FEELS like the old school Rider series. W even has a scarf, which hasn’t been seen on a rider since the 80s.

Double focuses on 2 characters specifically. Shotaro, and Phillip, who both run a detective agency in ecology based city Futo. In this city strange USB like devices called Gaia Memories give the users superpowers and turn them into monsters. Shotaro and Phillip are able to use Gaia Memories to become Kamen Rider Double. That’s right. Two people become one superhero. It’s a really cool plot device if you ask me.

The best parts about Double are the facts that Double has a much higher production value than any of the previous Rider series. The opening scene has more spectacle in it than the rest of the series did throughout their whole runs. The effects are leaps and bounds over the previous series. And like I said, this series actually feels like the original rider series where we get an idea of who the villain is right off the bat, instead of making us wonder throughout the whole season like the rest of the series have done.

My only nitpick so far is the character of Akiko. She comes off as whiney and annoying. But here’s hoping some character development fixes that.

So yeah, if you’re at all curious about the new Kamen Rider series, definitely give it a try.
